Small Valley Milling is a family owned and operated organic flour mill located in Small Valley, 7 miles from Halifax or 25 miles north of Harrisburg. Joel and Elaine Steigman purchased their farm in 1975 to continue their respective family traditions of farming and start a family of their own. They first grew primarily corn and other silage. At its height they expanded to 350 acres, though Joel and Elaine earned most of their income outside of the farm. In the 1990s Joel refocused on the farm and scaled down to pursue an interest in growing spelt and other grains. The farm received organic certification in 1997, and they added an on-site de-hulling facility and stone mill in the early 2000s. Their output steadily grew, and in 2009 Elaine retired from nursing to help with the business. Shortly after that, their son Eric quit his corporate agriculture job and returned to the family farm.
The flour they mill is produced primarily from grains grown their farm and is supplemented with with grain from neighboring farms. Small Valley Milling specializes in spelt and wheat flours, but have recently expanded to carry whole wheat, rye, and emmer kernels.
