10/20-10/22/2016 Overlap

Quick things:

  1. We’ll have fresh bread from McGrath’s Bakehouse all three days this week! (And Talking Breads available frozen.)
  2. We’ve got fresh ginger and fresh lemongrass this week. Rumor has it there will be some turmeric arriving on Friday. Green curry, anyone?
  3. It’s Third in the Burg this Friday, so from 5pm to 6pm we’ll be sipping wine (like every Friday) and sampling the new cheeses from Lakeside Pastures. And maybe some of the new Kim Chi from The Sweet Farm?
  4. I wish this week would last forever. Seriously — 80 degree days, cool nights, and all the best of summer and fall rolling in from the fields? Yes, please!

pastawithkaleandsungoldsBack in early June, our (self-proclaimed) favorite customer posted on my Facebook wall a link to this recipe for Fresh Tomato, Kale, and Caper Berry Pasta, saying it made her think of us. And for good reason — tomatoes, baby kale, capers, and pasta are pretty much our favorite things. Tomatoes and baby kale, though, are not things that are necessarily available locally at the same time, and so I commented that if there were any overlap between cherry tomatoes and baby kale, I would definitely be making it.

This morning, that very same friend posted a totally different recipe to my Facebook wall, which triggered in me both a hazy memory of that pasta recipe, and a realization that *this* was the week — perhaps the only week of the year — when we would have both cherry tomatoes and baby kale at the same time. And so, it was on.

I’m  happy to report that because we keep pasta, red wine vinegar, and capers (not berries, I confess) on hand at all times, the only store I needed to visit to get the remainder of the ingredients was Radish & Rye, where sungold cherry tomatoes, mixed baby kale, and fresh ricotta cheese had all been delivered earlier this afternoon. We also had some pesto we’d made last summer still in the freezer, so we were really all set. Halve some tomatoes, cook some pasta, throw in the kale, tomatoes, pesto, cheese, and capers, and boom! A very fast, very yummy weeknight dinner — and one that is surprisingly seasonal.

When the tomatoes are gone, I’ll return to our favorite Pasta with Anchovies, Garlic, Chiles, and Kale (about which I have previously posted), which, in all honesty, I believe is a better dish — but this week, perhaps/probably the last week we’ll have tomatoes available, I’ll go for the tomatoes. The combo of tomatoes and baby kale, just barely cooked by the hot pasta, is a perfect fit for these last warm days, when the weather pushes us back toward summery foods, but the dwindling light pushes us toward something a little more savory.
