9/1-9/3/2016 Cooling off

Quick things:

  1. canningtomatoesWe have another round of canning tomatoes available for pre-order. They’ll be delivered mid-day Friday for pickup anytime Friday afternoon or Saturday.
  2. The weather is supposed to be gorgeous this weekend, and it’s the Harrisburg Flea, and it’s Kipona, so it’s probably a great weekend to enjoy some of the festivities and then come to the Market for your Labor Day — and back-to-school eating — supplies. 🙂

Scroll down for the list of what we’ll have this week.

I have been somewhat obsessively checking the forecast for the past few days because my sister is getting married — outside — this Sunday. While the wedding has been the main motivator for this checking, I’ve also been delighting in the forecast for the upcoming market days. After a sweltering summer, a 76-degree Saturday sounds pretty okay to me. Of course, the forecast calls for more heat next week, but I’ll take what I can get for now. You know, until I start complaining that it’s too cold.

In seriousness, though, while high summer sees the bounty of tomatoes and fruit, I feel like it’s really late summer and even early fall when the fields just explode with variety, and you can get almost any kind of produce that you ever can around here (things like strawberries and asparagus notwithstanding). We’re starting to see lettuce come back in, and kale is easier to come by. Sweet potatoes make their first appearance this week! I had to make some hard decisions about whether or not to get some winter squashes in — and ultimately decided not to because we gotta have corn and tomatoes while we can, and there’s only so much space at the stand! But soon, I’m sure, as peaches fade out, and okra is over, and the corn dwindles, we’ll be seeing butternut and acorn squashes — and even pumpkins!

Deciding what to stock might be harder this time of year than any other — a few more months, and the options will be predictable and somewhat limited. Greens and roots, you know? For now, though, we can have almost anything we want. And for now, I’m sticking with the tomatoes and corn, as long as they’re available.

That said, if there’s a fall crop that you really just can’t wait to see, let us know and we’ll think a little harder about getting it sooner rather than later!

(Back to that obsessive forecast-checking —  just today Sunday’s predictions turned kind of ugly, with the potential for a crazy amount of rain — so if you have a second to think good thoughts about Sunday’s weather, I’m sure my sister would appreciate it.)
