So, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but it’s hot out there! Actually, right now, Wednesday afternoon, it’s totally lovely — but it’s been really hot, and it’s going to be really really hot this weekend.

I am very grateful that we have air conditioning at home for the first summer ever, as I can’t quite imagine how I’d be able to sit in front of the computer to write this if it were as hot inside as it’s been outside recently. On the other hand, it’s seemed hotter than last year inside the Market, and so I’ve wondered if maybe having AC at home has made me soft when it comes to handling the heat elsewhere. My wondering led me to look up historical temperature data for Harrisburg — and it turns out it seems hotter than last year inside the Market because it is hotter than last year. Last summer, there were no Market days when the outdoor recorded temperature was more than 90 degrees — there were a few in August where it hit 90, but none above. This summer, we’ve seen nothing but 90+ Market days since July started, and there’s no end in sight. We’re all drinking lots of water, splashing ourselves with lots of water, and enjoying the (relatively) cooler mornings and evenings.

I’m also trying to remember that the folks who are bringing us the gorgeous seasonal bounty each week are spending many of their days out in the sun doing the necessary work of planting, mulching, weeding, and harvesting to feed us all. Many of them are also worried about not just the temperature, but about the lack of rain. While Harrisburg isn’t experiencing any drought conditions, things are “abnormally dry” just north of us, and to much of the west of us — including the entirety of Perry and Juniata Counties, where many of our farmers are located. The Lancaster and Cumberland County farmers are faring better rain-wise, but I’m sure wherever you are right now, if you’re lucky enough to have good irrigation, you’re using it; and if you don’t, you’re struggling.

We’ve eaten an usually high number of meals away from home this past week, due to circumstances that have nothing to do with the heat, but when we are home, even with the air conditioning, we’re looking for foods that cool us, or can be cooked outdoors. We’ve had zucchini salad, grilled steak and zucchini, and — this isn’t really in keeping with the theme — some Fasta artichoke & asiago ravioli with a garlic truffle bechamel. The hit of the week, though, is the above-pictured Cucumber Onion Salad, which I made first last Wednesday, and Dusty loved so much he made it again on Monday to take to a boys’ potluck. We just finished the leftovers at lunch today, along with some BLTs made with yellow heirloom tomatoes. Cucumber salads in a sweet vinaigrette are a classic, especially here in Pennsylvania Dutch territory, and one of the brilliant things about them is that the vinegar keeps everything fresh so you can make a double batch and eat the leftovers for days (or weeks, really, but they won’t last that long!). Add feta at the end if you like, or not — it’s great either way!
