A little over five years ago, Radish & Rye “opened its doors” at the Broad Street Market.
A little over three years ago, Veronica Adams started working for us.
This week, we say a goodbye (but not goodbye!) to both.
You know about the market. It’s been nearly a month since we physically left, and Dusty has been spending Mondays and Tuesdays over the past few weeks getting the rest of our equipment out and deconstructing the pergola and taking down our signs. Tomorrow is the last official day of our lease.
I haven’t been over to see it since the sweltering day (they’ve all been sweltering!) we moved the last of the stuff we needed to the new store. I need to go over tonight; let myself in with a market key one last time; stand in silence in the now empty space and imagine I’m in one of those movie scenes where the main character is in the middle of a giant fast-moving crowd, the one unmoving person in sight, letting the memories or the humanity wash over them. We’ve got so many memories, and it feels so anti-climactic to not even be able to have a farewell party or anything. As exciting and wonderful as it is to be in the new space (and it is exciting and wonderful!), I am grieving what we’ve lost and ready to make my own ceremony, if nothing else.
I am happy to say that we did get to have a party for Veronica, albeit a little and socially-distant one in our backyard. We’re sad to say goodbye to her as well, but ritual helps. This spring, Veronica completed the coursework for her master’s degree in American Studies. Now she’s got a dissertation to write, and new adventures to embark on. We thought we’d get to keep her a little longer, but after pouring everything she had into the transition to curbside and then the transition to the store — and maybe not as much time to work on that dissertation as she’d planned! — it started making sense for her focus to shift sooner. We can’t wait to see what she does next.
It’s hard to overstate the contributions Veronica has made to Radish & Rye. She was the first person we ever hired who we didn’t know beforehand. She was the first person to be with us for more than a few months. She’s been with us through enormous growth, through the hiring (and, sadly, departures) of many more people, and she’s been instrumental in getting our amazing team to where it is now. She worked closely with us to develop training and onboarding programs that could work in our fast-paced and tightly-packed environment; she gave us invaluable feedback about our own management skills (and then more feedback and more feedback — we’re always learning!); and she was in the trenches with us as we developed nearly every system that guides us today.
We know, too, that over the years she has built relationships with many of you, and that some of you may know her better than you know Dusty and me! If any of you have messages you’d like us to pass on to her, we’re more than happy to do so.
We’re also happy that, like the market, Veronica isn’t really going anywhere (at least not yet!). We have deep love for both, and we’re looking forward to the day when we can meet Vero at the market for lunch, or maybe even an afternoon beer at Zeroday. Maybe someday we’ll have another party, to commemorate all the milestones and all the eras that have passed while the world was too crazy to be able to do it right.
In the meantime, we’ll enjoy visiting the Elementary window for morning coffees, socially-distant backyard beers with Vero, and seeing your smiling faces when we run your orders to your car.
So much is changing, but the fundamentals remain the same, and we — overwhelmed as we might sometimes be — are as strong as ever. And in a very real way, both the market and Veronica have had a big hand in that. We are so lucky for what we’ve had, so grateful for where we are now, and so excited for where we’re going.
