  • Time to start thinking about holiday hours already? The week of December 23-28, we’ll be open 7am-3pm Monday & Tuesday (that’s 12/23 & 12/24/2019), closed Wednesday and Thursday, back at it again for normal hours on Friday (7am-6pm),and normal hours on Saturday (7am-4pm). The same schedule will repeat the following week, open 12/30 and 12/31 until 3pm, closed New Years Day and Jan 2, open as normal on Friday and Saturday to kick off the new year with a bang!
  • Thanksgiving has come and gone, but we’ve still got some bargain organic sweet potatoes. While supplies last! (I think they’ll last at least this week and next week; certainly gone by Christmas.)
  • Share the goodness: through the end of the year, get a free tote bag will the purchase of a $25 gift card!
  • Gift card not your thing? Need to stuff a stocking? We’ve got plenty of goodies for the eater or cook on your list — maybe Calicutts’ Vanilla Bean Sugar? Epic Pickles’ Bloody Mary Mix? Tait Farm’s Spiced Vanilla Pear Shrub? A bottle of Keepwell Vinegar? Your favorite Torchbearer sauce?

Ready to roast!

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving, and a restful long weekend to go with it. I hibernated on Sunday. It hit the spot.

Our Thanksgiving was pretty great, too, if I can remember that far back. My parents hosted us and my sister’s family, plus Dusty’s parents and uncle, plus a couple of bonus friends. A hearty crowd, but nothing too chaotic. Delicious food, too! And now we move on — hello, December!

At the risk of my gratitude spilling out on both sides of Thanksgiving (that’s an okay kind of spill, right?), this week we are feeling grateful and honored to learn that The Food Trust, through their Fresh Food Financing Initiative, has awarded us a $30,000 grant towards equipment for the new store. This is really wonderful news that will help us bridge the funding gap that opened before our feet as construction costs and time have….increased….beyond what we’d planned for. Anytime we mention the funding, we’re also required to say, “This Project was financed in part by a grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Community and Economic Development.” So thank you, TFT and DCED, for your help. We’re very excited to bring fresh food to midtown, even on Mondays!

Our specific gratitude aside, are you familiar with The Food Trust? They’ve been doing excellent work — primarily in Philly, but now nationwide — on the issue of healthy food access. They have initiatives aimed at getting healthy foods into schools and corner stores, operating farmers markets in underserved areas, subsidizing the purchase of fruits and veggies for low-income individuals, and much more. As you’re making your giving decisions this season, I hope you’ll consider making a donation.

But don’t stop there — consider adding PASA to your list, for their work in supporting farmers moving toward sustainability, and consider The Gleaning Project for their work connecting food that would otherwise go to waste with people who would otherwise go hungry. There are many facets to the challenge before us, and many good people working on them.

Dare I say it? I’m grateful to live in a world where organizations like these exist.


P.S. It’s not food-related, but The Circle School is, of course, another one of my favorites. Circle School kids become adults with the critical thinking skills and agency to make real differences in the world. They’re a pretty awesome crew.

P.P.S. And just one little tease — another significant project I’ve been spending my time on recently is our own initiative for increasing accessibility for the lower income members of our community. I’m excited to roll it out when the store opens!
