Some quick things:

  • Want to receive this list via email each week? Sign up here.
  • Are you thinking about Thanksgiving turkeys yet? We are! We’re partnering with Village Acres Farm to bring you pastured birds raised by Reiff’s Poultry Farm. For more info, or to pre-order, visit the Village Acres website or talk to us at the stand. (This is the “early” reference in the title; late is the clock right now.)
  • The fall bounty continues with broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, spinach, delicata squash, and (available starting on Saturday) butternut squash.
  • Also some things I always associate with spring, like French Breakfast radishes and scallions.
  • It’s a fresh pork week — available under the milk are pork chops, picnic shoulder roasts, bar brats, grandpa’s chorizo, and sweet Italian.

The stuff of dreams.

Tonight I’m so far behind that I haven’t even done the bookkeeping yet. I think, now that it’s after 9pm, that it’s just not going to happen tonight…if you come to market tomorrow and I’m not there, I’m probably off writing checks to farmers. Really, that’s one of the perks of the job.

But in other news, which you really don’t need me for, it seems like fall is really really here. We had some really good transition weather, and then some suddenly hot weather, and then WHOMP some fall weather. Seems like this is it (and maybe if I say that we’ll get a few more days in the 70s?).

I’ve been, as always, watching the transition from a food perspective, thinking about the things that are slowly disappearing, and what I want to make sure to do before they’re gone. We got word this week that some of our farmers are pulling out their pepper plants, making it likely that this is the last week for a plethora of peppers. When I get that news, my first thought is always that I need to make a huge batch of chili with all the peppers. Chilacas and jalapenos and poblanos for spice. Bells and habanadas for sweetness. All of them for flavor. This is like, the moment, right, when the peppers are still around, but a pot simmering for hours sounds like a great idea? Maybe also time to pull out some of that corn we froze to mix into a batch of cornbread? Maybe some scallions in there, too?

Did I mention we haven’t eaten dinner yet?

I’m also dreaming about Alison Roman’s Sheet Pan Chicken with Chickpeas, Cumin, and Turmeric (or at the NY Times here, for those with an account). I’m dreaming about Farro and Royer Mountain Pie. I’m dreaming about some kind of frittata or crustless quiche that lives in my fridge so I can grab a slice for a quick breakfast or lunch. I’m even dreaming about the dinner we made last night — Dusty’s huge portion pictured above — Za’atar rubbed chicken with extra sesame seeds, roasted cauliflower, and a toasted farro/baby kale/garlic/lemon juice/sunflower oil salad I threw together with the farro I toasted (350 for 15 minutes) for the purposes of making that farro pie and then started fantasizing about pairing with the chicken, and, well, now I’m going to have to toast more farro to make that pie.

For now, though, I’m going to go eat the burgers Dusty’s making for our (very late) dinner, so I can get in bed and dream for real. It’ll probably still be about food…
