Some quick things:

  • The good news: a limited number of ugly peaches are with us yet again. I know, right? Also, this week ugly pears make their debut, in case you’ve been thinking about a pear galette or some other pear treat.
  • We’ve also still got honeycrisp apples, pretty Bartlett pears, figs (in the cheese case), and kiwiberries. I put a container of kiwiberries open on a shelf in the fridge and every time I open the door I eat one or two, and MAN do I love them. And I just got word that more paw paws are on their way! They’ll arrive
  • New and noteworthy this week are spinachleeksred cabbage, spicy padron peppersrainbow carrots, and spaghetti squash.
  • And speaking of fall treats, we’ve got some hitting the shelves this week: Calicutts Autumn Harvest Spice Blend, and Tait Farms’ Spiced Vanilla Pear Shrub. That shrub makes a mean hot toddy on a chilly night.
  • It’s once again a fresh pork week — we’ve got pork chops, Boston Butt roasts, tenderloinground porkbreakfast sausage, spicy Tuscan sausage, and sweet Italian sausage.

Really just those quick things tonight, as I’m eager to join Dusty for a little market-eve mini-date. By which I mean, go eat bar food, hear about the end of the movie I fell asleep during last night, and generally feel cozy.

I’m craving cozy in my home meals, too. Pictured is a quick and easy stir fry-inspired sheet pan dinner — Korean BBQ sausage with peppers, onions, and broccoli, under the broiler (but not *right* under) for 10-15 minutes. Over seasoned rice that cooked in the Instant Pot in the same amount of time. Yes yes yes.

Not pictured was my first fall eating of a winter staple in this house — braised kale with lots of garlic and a can of beans. I chopped up a couple tomatoes this round, because I could, and because I won’t be able to for much longer.

I haven’t dipped my toes (er, fork) too deeply into the fall foods yet — haven’t had any delicata squash, or sweet potatoes, or celeriac, or even any regular potatoes. Maybe it’s part of my campaign against season creep. Maybe it’s my denial about the coming winter. Whichever it is, or whatever it is, I’m ready to let go of it. It’s fall! I’m thinking delicata roasted and stuffed with spicy Tuscan sausage (or, heck, any sausage). I’m thinking potato leek soup. I’m thinking mashed potatoes with celeriac. I’m thinking sweet potatoes dripping with butter. I’m thinking I’m hungry!

P.S. I’m also having fun playing with adding still-here summer treats to my cozy fall meals — like the tomatoes in my braised kale. I don’t have a fully fleshed out idea yet, but I’m thinking a lot about a sweet potato/chile pepper combo. I mean, maybe that’s it? Roasted sweet potatoes topped with roasted chile peppers? Maybe some sour cream on top? If you have an idea, talk to me.

P.P.S. The drywall is hung!
