Real Italian Taleggio, available now at Hummer’s.

Quick things:

  1. Hummer’s is now stocking Taleggio. We’re very excited about this!
  2. It’s a Talking Breads week! Fresh on Thursday. (Through mid-May or so, we’ll have Talking Breads fresh only on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month.)
  3. Currently on sale: Sweet Farm live lacto-fermented “I Heart Kim Chi”; Village Acres Farm eggs; and Apple Valley Creamery butter.
  4. Recently restocked: Sweet Farm lacto-fermented live sauerkrauts & pickles; JuJo Acres beef; Epic pickles; Calicutts spices; Lakeside Pastures cheeses, and Three Springs pantry items. (You all wiped us out over the holidays!)

Scroll down for the list of what we’ll have this week.

So, maybe it’s weird that the number one item we’re featuring this week isn’t one that we ourselves are selling. I get that. But, since we came to the market (and largely gave up our already-small grocery store habit), Taleggio (tuh-LEDGE-ee-oh) has been one of the few items we just haven’t been able to get without a special trip to the DiBruno Bros section of the Camp Hill Giant.

“I wish Ryan Hummer sold Taleggio!” we have said to each other time and time again. “If we could get Taleggio here, this market would really be perfect!” we’ve said. “Do you think we could justify selling Taleggio ourselves, even though it’s not local?” (No.*) And, on occasion, “I’m going to get some Taleggio. Do we need anything else from the grocery store?”

But no more! Now we just have to remember to venture down the aisle before it’s sold out, and we can get Taleggio any market day! So, despite my slight worry that it’ll sell out this week before we have an opportunity to grab a chunk, I would like to encourage you to give Hummer’s Taleggio a try. One, because I want to encourage him to keep selling it (oh what a tease it would be if it went away now!), and two, because it’s just so delicious. Washed with seawater, Taleggio has a funky aroma, a soft creamy texture, and a rich mushroomy/tangy flavor — and it’s oh-so-perfect with a Talking Breads batard or a McGrath’s baguette. I love cheese, and this is one of the best.

Buon appetito!

*We have in the past carried a local creamery’s rendition of a Taleggio-style cheese, and rumor has it we may be getting more within the next few weeks. I’m excited to do a side-by-side comparison!
