Scroll down for the list of what we’ll have this week

tomatoesIMG_20160706_204245352I started this week inspired by the appearance of tomatoes just as strawberries faded away, thinking that I wanted to write about the seasons — their beauty, their endless marching, their proclivity to present you with exactly what you need at just the right moment, even their reliability. Maybe mostly their reliability. But today has felt anything but reliable, and so now that I am actually sitting down to write, I am thinking more about fickleness, about best-laid-plans, and about how yesterday I had what looked like a spare few minutes and thought, “Maybe I should go ahead and compile the list for the week now rather than scrambling tomorrow night to get it done,” and how, if I had done that, the list would have been wildly inaccurate* based on what I know now that updates and deliveries have started to come in.

If I were a farmer, I think I would be constantly marveling at the paradox of it all — at how reliable it is, that winter turns into spring and spring turns into summer, and asparagus appears and asparagus gives way to strawberries and strawberries give way to tomatoes, and…I’m not ready to think about what happens when tomatoes give way. But! as reliable as the seasons are, the day-to-day is equally unreliable. One day (Monday) it’s 70 degrees, and then two days later it’s 95 and your lettuce is getting scorched and your squash have doubled in size and since the strawberries are over you really want to be harvesting tomatoes but since it was unseasonably cool a month ago they aren’t really in full force yet and….on and on and on.

But back to that asterisk from the first paragraph…I had to stop my train of thought and add it, because although the amount of texting and calling and emailing Dusty and I have done over the past 36 hours — along with the complete destruction of my planned schedule for the day — had me believing that there were major changes since Tuesday morning, now that I look at what we’ve actually received, and are anticipating receiving tomorrow, I see that nearly every item we thought we were going to get from one farm and couldn’t, we were able to find from another farm. So there you go: the seasons, inexorable, even when the moments and days seem anything but.
