I am practically giddy with this weather! It’s like a great weight I didn’t quite realize I was carrying has been lifted.

As elated as I am about the coming spring, I am also realizing that this might actually be the hardest time of year for eating local. Baby greens are fairly abundant, but supplies of storage crops are starting to dwindle, and it will be weeks before asparagus — the first real spring crop, and a milestone of the season — is ready. At the same time, though, many of us are aching for more than just a few days of unseasonably warm weather and the foods those days will bring.

To tide ourselves over until the asparagus arrives, Dusty and I have been eating chevre and apples, radishes, fritattas with wilted young greens, and other simple foods with a little more lightness and brightness than some of the remaining storage crops.

Of course, this time of year the weather can vary greatly from day to day, so I’m also glad that there are still turnips, potatoes, carrots, and more to comfort us on the remaining chilly days.
