mesclunmixInteracting with hundreds of people each weekend, Dusty and I have noticed (and I’ve probably mentioned this before) that there seem to be themes to people’s moods and general feelings about the world from week to week. This week the theme seems to be a combination of feeling overwhelmed and burdened, but also eager for the next stage to come. I’m feeling this, too! It seems seasonally appropriate to me, when in one week we see both 60 degrees *and* a dusting of snow. I find winter Hard (yes, with a capital ‘H’), and by this point, I. Have. Had. It. And it seems like I don’t need to be patient much longer! And then it snows. The words that come to my mind for describing the resulting feeling are all too extremely melodramatic for me to comfortably actually use them when talking about the slight dusting we had overnight, so I think I’ll just leave it at that….

But there *are* signs of spring. From a local produce perspective, we will feel spring long before the real hallmarks of it (asparagus!) arrive, but already we are seeing a greater variety of greens available. While the only mature kale we have is from the Steelton-Highspire aquaponic greenhouse, the list of baby and salad greens hasn’t been this long since it was still officially fall. It’s good timing for me, as all I’m craving right now is a hearty bed of greens (preferably those scarlet mustard greens) topped with some shredded cheese. There might not be a lot of variety available here at this time of year, but I am deeply grateful that what is available seems to line up so well with what I’m craving.
