I missed a week! Sorry. 🙁American Harvest Pork

In the intervening week, I finally made the apple crisp — twice! It was really good, and sooo simple. The first round, adhering pretty closely to the recipe we had available at the stand, was a little too sweet for my taste, so the second time I used 3/4 cup brown sugar instead of 1/2 cup each of white and brown. I also kept it in the oven for nearly an hour, instead of the 45 minutes the recipe called for. Both ways were excellent, and the best part is that it’s very forgiving, so I’m sure I’ll tweak it every time I make it (which I suspect will be often as long as apples are available).

The other food highlight of the week was an incredible dinner Dusty made, pictured right while still in the crock pot. I’m calling it “American Harvest Pork”, because the combination of seemingly disparate things came together in a way that seemed like it could only come from this continent, at this moment in the season. I don’t think either of us could give you anything that resembles a recipe, but it included a North Mountain Pastures shoulder roast, Joshua Farm tomatillos and sage, Lancaster County fish peppers, and a medley of additional Village Acres and Spiral Path peppers — all served over roasted Baby Pam Pie Pumpkin from Village Acres. Savory, spicy, sweet…perfect. We’d already polished off the second apple crisp, but it was okay — I didn’t have any room left for dessert anyway.

The frost last weekend marked the end of many summer items — no more tomatoes! — but the fall items are still coming in strong. As our farmers transition back to more high tunnel growing in preparation for winter, leafy greens — especially baby greens — are back in full force. Also back is apple sauce!

(***Breaking news after I first published this — we *may* get another round of sungold tomatoes this week from the greenhouse at Piney Mountain Orchard!)
